Deichmann as an employer

It all began in the working district of Essen-Borbeck in the heart of the Ruhr region. Heinrich Deichmann, born in 1888, opened a shoemaker’s shop which he ran together with his wife Julie. Two generations later and almost 100 years later, the company has become the market leader in Europe. Deichmann is now represented in 31 countries with around 4,600 shops and employs over 48,000 people. Deichmann is still a family business that attaches great importance to organic growth. Going public and bank loans are not an issue for the owners.

As an independent family business and Europe’s largest shoe retailer, we can look back on a success story spanning more than 100 years. Our values and our corporate culture form the basis for this success. Our actions follow our overarching corporate goal:

„The company must serve the people.“ This refers to our customers, employees, suppliers and people in need.

Based on our corporate mission statement, we have also developed guidelines for management and cooperation at Deichmann. These „rules of the game“ complement and concretise our values and our culture for everyday life in the company. Of course, our corporate mission statement can also be found on paper. But first and foremost it has to be lived. This is noticeable every day in our company and is confirmed to us regularly, especially by our new employees. The often long tenures of our employees reflect this.

Deichmann X London School of Economics

Our Project Week

Deichmann and the The London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) work together on issues concerning the future of retailing. As the first partner company in the history of the LSE, we had the privilege to host a project week together with 90 students at the campus in Essen.

As part of the „Master’s in Management“ program, students from 31 countries delved into groundbreaking topics for #Deichmann, SNIPES, and Solebox, including effects of the Metaverse on the retail industry, new business models around shoe recycling, the utilization of social media platforms, managing change in organizations, sustainability, employer branding, and the success factors for omnichannel customer loyalty programs.
